 Past As Prelude: Columbia Baroque Soloists: USC School of Music Recital HallFriday, February 15, 2013 By the eve of the American Revolution, Charleston was the cultural heart of the colonial South. It was the fourth most populace, the wealthiest, and supported more professional musicians than any other city in the English colonies. Making music was an important part of life and a mark of social distinction for the ladies and gentlemen of eighteenth century South Carolina. To assist them in developing their musical talents, the “Music Master” became a familiar and important figure. Our concert follows the lives of two such “Music Masters,” Frederick Grunzweig, who arrived in the colony in the 1740’s from Holland, and James McAlpine, who arrived from Scotland as early as 1712. They were the first teachers of the viola da gamba and recorder in the colony while also teaching harpsichord and singing; the colonial embodiment of the Columbia Baroque Soloists. Our concert includes the most current music on the London stage being imported and sold by colonial merchants. It was performed and enjoyed by both family and professional musicians. An exciting evening to fund an honorable endeavor! Fundraiser to Aid Wounded Veterans: SC Confederate Relic Room and Military MuseumThursday, February 21, 2013 | 5:30-7:30 PM Soldiers returning from combat zones sometimes need additional help to treat their emotional or physical wounds, and that’s where the non-profit organizations Hidden Wounds and the Independence Fund step in to serve these soldiers and their families. This fundraiser is part of an effort to reach more veterans with their specialized services. Highlights of the fundraiser include a beer and wine tasting, light hors d'oeuvres, and a silent auction. A viewing of the museum’s newest exhibit, “Conflict Zone: A Groundbreaking Look at War" (a project of the Independence Fund) and the independent film “Soldier Girl” will be available throughout the evening.
